The Law Offices of Thalheimer and Palumbo, P.C. specializes in legal counsel and representation to disabled students and their parents in educational matters. School law, in particular special education law, has been our focus since 1995. We have helped hundreds of students from preschool age upward to obtain the individualized educational program (IEP) and services they need to be successful in school and in life. At any time, our clients include a wide range of exceptional young people who range from being mildly delayed in acquiring specific skills such as in reading or math, perhaps due to a specific learning disability such as dyslexia, to multiply disabled students who require highly specialized instruction and assistive technology in order to learn.
As “special education law specialists” we work closely with many different educational experts, such as school psychologists, speech-language pathologists, reading specialists, occupational therapists, physical therapists and behaviorists. Often these specialists guide us in understanding the unique needs of each child we represent. More often than not, we are able to achieve our clients’ goals through negotiation, IEP meetings, informal meetings and mediation. When an amicable resolution is not possible, we advocate vigorously for our clients at Due Process Hearings and in State and Federal Courts when appropriate. The remedies we seek for disabled children, in addition to changes to their educational programming and services or accommodations in school, can include compensatory education benefits and private school placements or if appropriate, reimbursement to parents for the cost of tuition and related expenses at a private school.
